Leaning how to sing from your diaphragm is quite difficult, especially when you have no clue whatsoever on getting that good and strong breath. Breathing is an important thing to do not only for life, but also for singing. Each note you sing is brought out of your body by your breath, so it’s important to have a strong breath throughout the entire time that you sing. Breathing is something that is hard to do, but with a bit of practice and coordination, you can easily get that voice to always and easily sing with your diaphragm.
•Ssss
The snake Ssss sound is an exercise many singers have done to control their breath. To successfully use this exercise, breathe deeply and feel that diaphragm of yours expand on several normal breaths. You should then inhale deeply and let it out on a long SSS, sort of like you’re a snake. Do this around 10 to 20 times always trying to go longer and longer. Once you’ve done this several times, you’ll be extremely shocked at how well you’ll be singing afterwards. Try to get that diaphragm and those ribs to stay upright and not collapse, as this isn’t a correct breath. Instead, keep those ribs raised and you should be fine.
•Physical exercise
Simply stretching your body is actually a very good way to teach your body how to sing from your diaphragm. Take our right leg and bring it all the way to your chest while you’re bending your left leg and standing. While you’re in this position, breathe deeply and feel that diaphragm of yours expand. Stay at this position for ten seconds breathing deeply and then do it on the other leg. This is very powerful and can help you out greatly with singing from your diaphragm. You should also do the rag doll where you sort of touch your toes and act like you’re a rag doll. While you’re here, start breathing deeply and it should help your upper body relax.
•Shhh
The Shhh exercise is nice because it can help bring that breath out of your mouth to project a much clearer sound. So, simply say Shhh as if you were telling someone to be quiet. I suggest that you take in one breath and let it out on a Shh, and once the first one is done, take a few normal breaths and then do it again. This can help you tremendously on getting a more steady breath from your diaphragm, and can actually strengthen your overall breath support.
All of these techniques can greatly help your body to learn how to sing from your diaphragm. When you combine each one individually and you do them altogether, you can easily sing very well without any problems. The diaphragm is a tough thing to control in our bodies, but if you don’t try to control and use it effectively, your voice won’t get better. Train your diaphragm by doing the above exercises. They are definitely going to help you sing with your diaphragm.
