In time and with experience, you can master the art of marching band. It seems impossible at first to not only remember music but play while you are marching in rythym with a group of people. The synchronisation of the band will help you learn the steps after you have memorized the music. It will beless difficult to memorize the music if you listen for patterns and repetitive sequences. If reading music for you is difficult, now is the time to get some great instruction. Ask your teacher.

Suggestions for learning the music

Divide the music into three parts, look for any parts that repeat. If you analyze the music this way, you may be able to learn it quicker. Remember also that music in band is often played simultaneously by other instruments. If you get lost, listen to what the others are playing. Do not try to learn the music as a whole all at once. Play a sequence with the music and then try to repeat what you just played without the music. After memorizing the first sequence, connect it to the next by repeating the process.

Marching band, music and steps from memory

You can be proud of your accomplishments in marching band after you learn the basics. Quick tips for memorizing are as follows:

Work on the music first, before the marching, if you are able to.

First, cut up the music into sections so you can work with them one at a time.

If you can find phrases that repeat, you only have to learn one section.

Parts are often played by other instruments also. Listen to the other parts if you get lost.

High school marching band is often the first time many of you will have to choose an instrument. Don’t worry, this may be a good time to experiment with a few instruments and see what you are best suited for.

Memories of marching band may last a lifetime so enjoy the ride, or walk I guess you might say.
