Everybody dreams of being a rockstar on-stage. Such a grand image it is of being up on a stage with a roaring crowd who sings along as you play. Imagine the excitement of a special effects light show or a multi-media show behind the stage as the band plays. Rockstars do seem to have a glamorous life. Reaching a goal like that in your dreams will take both education and discipline. You’ll have to learn a lot and practice often before you can think of playing for an audience or becoming a famous rock star. You have to start with guitar for beginners.

Tuning your guitar

Guitar tuning might be difficult at the start in a little bit hard to pick up as with all things in life you gradually get better at with practice. When tuning a guitar many people not just yourself find it difficult to separate the pitches that are in tune from those who are out of tune. From beginners to professionals many people use electric tuners to assist them with tuning their guitars. I would suggest if you do not have an electric tuner to go to your local guitar store and pick one up.

First string

Let’s start tuning. The first thing you need to do when tuning the guitar is to find the fifth fret of the first string. Which is the first string? It is the thinnest string on the guitar. Once you have found it apply firm pressure with your finger to the string. Now with the other hand pluck the string you can’t hear any sound move your hand closer to the middle of the guitar without leaving without leaving the fifth fret.

Now with your tune alongside you compare the pitch of the string to the note of the tuner. If the two sounds differ from one another than simply turn the first string is not until the note sounds the same. Though when you first start out your ears can sometimes play tricks on you.

Now to begin tuning the second string

As with the first string place your finger on the second string on the fifth fret, but instead of playing just the second string you leave the first string open which means no fingers on it by you/both the first and second strings. If the two pitches sound different than simply just adjust the second strings peg until the two pitches are equal.

Tuning the third string

Now you might think that this process is just going to keep on repeating itself when it is a little tricky though it is similar. This time play the third string but on the fourth fret. While the third string is still ringing play the second string open (no fingers) and adjust the third strings peg until the pitches match.

Fourth fifth & sixth string

When tuning the fourth string you simply do the same as when tuning the first and second strings. Play the fourth string on the fifth fret, then play the third string open until the two stringed pitches match. For the last two strings you just repeat the same process as you did for the fourth string. You’ll notice that the fifth and sixth strings sound very similar this is because they are both the notes and really you should be able to tune them together as if they were one string, But if you’re a beginner I would suggest doing them separately first.

What makes Jimi Hendrix’s sound easily recognizable from Carlos Santana? How can you easily tell metal from funk, even if let’s say the metal player and the funk player are playing the same song (very unlikely, but bear with me here)? The answer: guitarists use effects to color their sound and give it a kind of modification suited to the type of music involved.

Normally these effects can be housed separately in small effects pedals, or in multi-effects hardware, or built into amplifiers, or simulated in computer software. They can be used by themselves, or you can turn on combinations of effects to get a particular sound. We will identify the different types of guitar effects so you can choose the one that is perfect for creating the sound you want.

Distortion effects are popular in genres like rock, metal, etc. This is what produces the heavy, rough, raw sound you hear in these genres. Distortion effects can be divided into categories like overdrive/distortion (this is the well-known rough sound), fuzz (which is used to copy the sound of a vibrating torn speaker – thus being “fuzzy”), and high-gain (the thick, loud, “chugging” sound used in heavy metal). Almost all rock bands have these as a given, and is a good, basic investment.

Filtering effects are effects which shape the sound by enhancing or minimizing certain frequencies. Here you can find equalizers (similar to how normal equalizers work), and wahs (a foot-operated pedal that lets through increasingly higher or lower frequencies by rocking the pedal). The wah pedal is named because it sounds like a person saying a long “wah” when rocked (the low frequencies are the “w-“ and the high frequencies are the “-ah” part). You can hear this mostly in funky grooves.

Volume effects are just that, they modify the volume in different ways. Examples of these are volume pedals (these are just volume knobs in the shape of a pedal which you can rock back and forth), tremolos (which is used to copy the sound of a volume knob being turned up and down quickly, making the tone “fluctuate”), and compressors (used to preserve a certain volume level as the signal gets louder).

Time-based effects take a sound signal and copy it, making a kind of echoing sound. Delay pedals can change the delay time between the original sound and the copied sound, up to very long delay times, making a rolling echo-like sound (a notable user of delay effects is U2’s The Edge). Reverb pedals, however, copy the sound produced in a large space, where little echoes pile up and decay quickly. Aside from distortion effects, these are also popular, and may be an essential part of your setup.

Modulation effects are effects which actually change how the sound sounds. Examples of these are phase shifters (which makes a sort of whooshing sound by copying the original signal and then putting it out of phase regularly), flangers (which create a kind of speeding-up or slowing-down sound), chorus pedals (copying the sound of several guitarists playing at the same time), and rotary speakers (copying the sound of a signal going through spinning speakers, making a kind of wavy pitch-changing effect). These types of effects are used to create those experimental, space-age-sounds.

Pitch shifters change the pitch of a signal, then combines it with the original sound so that it sounds like two guitars blending together in harmony. It can even be used as a bass guitar if you set it one octave lower than normal, or produce a video-gamey sound if set one octave higher.

You can experiment with combinations of pedals and connect them in chains to figure out what type of sound you want to create. After a while you can tell which effects were used in your favorite songs, and I hope this introduction can help you on the road to creating your own sound, and adding new dimensions to your musical adventure.

Often, it can come secondary to playing, but if you want to continue to play for a longer time, then keeping it in the best condition is vital.

·    After Practicing
The deterioration of the strings is a common problem amongst guitarists. If the strings start to rust, then they become very rough and have a higher propensity of cutting into your fingers. A guitarist with cut fingers is not going to play as well, so it is important to make sure that the strings of your guitar do not get to this stage. To prevent this, make sure that as soon as you have finished practicing take a soft cloth and clean the strings.

This very simple action will rid your strings of all the dirt, oil and sweat that accumulates. Another good idea is, before you case your guitar, to apply a layer of conditioner. You can pick these up for less than ten dollars, so they are relatively cheap and are great for preventing the oxidization of the strings which causes them to rust.

Clean the fretboard
As well as the strings, there can often be an accumulation of dirt and grease around the fretboards. If unchecked, this can damage the sound of the guitar, and eventually the integrity of the instrument. The next time you change your strings, take a look at the fretboards and clean them with a damp cloth.

·    Care for your body!
All you need to do is polish it regularly with a lint-free cloth. Make sure you use only guitar-specific polishes – some of the more widely available household polishes are more likely to be abrasive and cause some serious damage. A lot of people neglect the body of the guitar as they focus too much on the strings and the fretboard. Whilst these do need a lot of attention, paying a bit of attention to the body of your guitar will prolong its life by a large factor.

·    Storage
For ideal conditions, you should be looking at storing your guitar at around 50% humidity and a temperature of around 25 degrees C. Your guitar is a very sensitive instrument, and is extremely sensitive to the environment in which it is stored. Wood is a porous substance, which means it can absorb moisture. Whilst most guitars are tolerant to a range of temperatures, excessive moisture will cause swelling which in turn causes the wood to warp and affects the overall sound.

·    Scratches

It may sound obvious, but you’d be amazed at how many people have made this mistake! Before you even start to play, make sure you have removed all your jewellery and other accoutrements that may damage your guitar. The obvious things are things like bracelets and rings, but I have also seen expensive guitars scratched badly by something as simple as a belt buckle!

For the majority of the time, simply by applying common sense you will prolong the lifespan of your guitar. Guitar maintenance is not rocket science, and by treating your guitar with the respect that it deserves, you will get better rewards out of playing it.

The only significant downfall when it comes to online learning, is that there is no-one there to ask a question to when you get stuck. It can seem a little frustrating at times when you come across something that you don’t understand. This, however, is a pretty small disadvantage when you consider all the benefits of learning to play the guitar online.

Even though you’re not a guitar player, I’m pretty sure you know at least one musical scale, and I’m also betting it’s the C Major scale. The film The Sound of Music made famous the “do-re-mi” song that actually translates to a C Major scale (for complete beginners, the notes for a C Major scale are C-D-E-F-G-A-B).

But if your goal is to be a rocking lead guitarist, there’s a type of scale that you definitely must know, and that is the pentatonic scale. Pentatonic scales are the foundation for most rock and blues solos, and it’s important that you know how to make them.

Simply put, pentatonic scales have one major difference with normal scales: while normal scales have seven notes, pentatonic scales have only five (the term penta- means ‘five’). Other than that, there’s basically no difference. But how would I know which notes are in the pentatonic scales?

Let’s take that C Major scale. The notes for that would be C-D-E-F-G-A-B. If you take away the fourth note and the seventh note, you would be left with C-D-E-G-A. And that’s basically just how you make a pentatonic major scale: you take out the fourth and seventh notes of a major scale! So if you have a song that uses a C chord, you can master a solo on your guitar but NOT play F and B chords. The pentatonic major scale is a foundation of modern rock, and Jimi Hendrix is known to use the pentatonic major scale a lot.

The pentatonic minor scale is also created a bit differently. For a pentatonic minor scale, of course you would need a minor scale to begin with. Let’s take the A Minor scale for example. The notes for that would be A-B-C-D-E-F-G. For the pentatonic minor, however, you would need to take out the second and sixth notes, leaving you with A-C-D-E-G. The pentatonic minor scale is widely used in blues solo progressions.

A final observation: did you notice that the notes for the C pentatonic major scale are the same for the A minor pentatonic scale? That’s a weird relationship of pentatonic major and minor scales. Basically the notes of a pentatonic major scale for a given key are the same for a pentatonic minor for a key three steps down, but your root notes are different of course.

It may take a bit of practice for you to master pentatonic major and minor scales, but once you do perfect them you’re basically on the way to a better understanding of guitar soloing for blues or rock. And a final word: pentatonic scales have less notes, so they’re easier to remember and play! So go ahead and play!
