The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit: Sloan Wilson’s smooth novel of Madison Avenue executive battling to get ahead and to find meaning in his home life. Great cameo by Ann Harding who plays March’s spouse. Inscribed by the controller; music by Bernard Herrmann. Cast includes Gregory Poke, Jennifer Jones, Fredric March, Marisa Pavan, and Henry Daniel. Bugsy: Beatty gives the most bizarre behavior of his occupation as Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, the fabled crackpot gangster who helped develop Las Vegas. Long however well-informed story manages to avoid gangster stereotypes. Beatty and Bening set off kindles together just as they did in genuine life, and a hefty aiding cast fleshes out James Toback’s knowledgeable script. Keitel, cast as Mickey Cohen, played Siegel in the Television film The Virigina Tale Tale. Cast includes Warren Beatty, Annette Bening, Harvey Keitel, Ben Kingsley, Elliott Gould, Joe Mantegna, Bill Graham, and Debrah Farentino. (135 minutes, 1991)
Philadelphia: Andrew Beckett is a gay lawyer who has aids. He is dying of the disease. He was fired from the conservative law firm he worked for because there was fear of contracting the disease from him. As he battles to live on, he chooses to sue the law firm, to help further the cause of other aids victims. His originally homophobic lawyer, fights through his prejudice to fight for this cause.
Pearl Harbor: Part old-styled silver-monitor romance, part boys’ venture, part enormous re-creation of December seven, 1941: a gigantic Hollywood film. Infrequent silliness and anticlimactic rendering of Doolittle’s pillage on Tokyo are counter-act by thrilling and appalling illustration of the scandalous bombing assault on Pearl.
