The Advantages Of Violin Training For Kids

Kids and violins on the surface don’t sound like a good mix, but the violin is really a practical instrument with a couple of advantages for even very young children.  The violin is preferable to other instruments for kids for several reasons :

Portability :

The violin is one of the most conveyable instruments around, being small and compact and needing no amplifiers, microphones or attachments.  A violin can be carried in a tiny case by even a baby.  Try that with a guitar or a piano.

Sizing :

The violin comes in one or two different sizes, with very small sizes to fit the youngest students.  This is an instrument that may be replaced as youngsters grow, rather than an one-size-fits-all instrument that a kid could have a hard time handling.  To size a violin, please see my article on choosing the proper violin for your child.

Sound volume :

As bizarre as it sounds, the screeching noise of a kid learning the violin is really not that bad.  It is quieter than drums and other large instruments, and it is less provoking than the flute.

Cost :

The heavy cost of some instruments make them significant investments, and may make folks scared about letting youngsters learn on them.  Even a small piano is quite costly, as are cellos, tubas, saxophones, for example.  A violin is much less costly than most other instruments.

Music reading :

If the primary target of music lessons is to educate your kid to read music, a violin is ideal.  Violins have only four strings, making them better to learn than a guitar.  The few notes, once learned, teach the child the fundamentals of reading notes and music symbols that later be applied to other instruments.

Responsibility :

The small size of the violin implies a child can have responsibility for it.  Even a kid in the early elementary years should be ready to take care of the violin, put it away, and retrieve it for lessons.  This is a lesson in responsibility that would not happen if the instrument was larger and had to be handled and sorted by adults.  The violin is kind of like a goldfish that can’t die if the child doesn’t feed it.

Versatility :

The sound of a violin can go from the lilting sounds of classical music to the weird screeching of the fiddle.  This permits the child a possibility for self expression through music.
