I was not even 10 years old when I knew I had to play guitar. The guitarists I looked up to were Clapton, Segovia and the Beatles.
The guitar was a mysterious instrument and I wanted to play one. I cared about nothing except how to learn guitar.
At first I had little else save the desire to learn. The internet and online learning had not come into being, these were pre-historic times indeed. With all of the information out there now it is much easier for you to learn guitar than it ever was for me. When there is an abundance of advice available to you it is easy to get lost in too much detail and not stay on course as you learn guitar. It is best if you have a system to learn guitar.
With all of the info out there it can be foolish to pay 50 dollars an hour for someone to show you how to tune a guitar or what the strings are named and so forth. With the online learning courses, you can play and replay as much as you like and learn at a pace that is comfortable for you. State of the art videos are included and you can really see the teachers hands and picking motion.
I was very motivated when I started out and I taught myself a great deal. This is not always true for everyone. Luckily there is no reason to work so hard as so much of the basics all the way to great guitar playing are in online courses. I know you will try to learn a lot on your own. When you do I recommend folk guitar books as they have all of the basic strums with very familiar songs.
The teacher can be a crucial part of your growth in any part of music, learning how to sing or guitar lessons or learning piano. The teacher can unfortunately be not suited to your temperament or aptitude also. If your teacher is a rocker, he may not be the one to teach you classical guitar, for example. You can spend a whole lot of money on teachers so I would recommend, at least at first to try an online program which is about the cost of a couple of lessons. You can get a lot of mileage from it and you will know what to do next.
At first learning how to play guitar is baffling . The guitar is unlike piano in the respect that it is not easy to see the chord positions; the guitar has many different positions for the same chord. While just starting, all of this in combination with left and right hand techniques as well as tab and different tunings and it can very quickly become overwhelming.
You are so fortunate to have before you this wonderful journey to learn guitar; enjoy every minute of it. You will not be sorry.
