If you are beginning to learn how to play piano, the following suggestions will be most invaluable .

The first thing you need to do to is find a teacher that is competent .

The right instruction is so important that it could be the most important decision you make in your early stages of learning piano. They can guide you and keep you from developing bad habits that may last for years and be difficult to eradicate.

You will also find that online training has come a very long way and is an exceptional way for many people to  begin learning piano.

Some say you can learn by ear and it is true to some extent of course, but nothing is better than good instruction.

There are many musicians that cannot read and most of these people are so talented and such good natural musicians that perhaps they are not held back too much. However I think if they were asked they would admit they wish they could have learned more about music theory and it’s application.

The use of instruction will allow you to become a competent pianist in a much shorter time.

If you are thinking of starting your child on piano lessons, do not make the mistake of taking lessons from a friend who plays, just to “try it out,” unless of course the friend is a competent teacher.

If you child has a proficiency and decides to stick with it, they will have a hard time unlearning bad habits they acquire from an unqualified teacher.

If you have a friend or relative instruct your child you may be less inclined to push the teacher to push your child. You will also most likely not criticize their teaching methods, even when it may be perfectly reasonable to do so.

It almost goes without saying but you need to practice regularly in order to be a better pianist, or a singer or a songwriter.

Too many people never reach their potential because they simply do not put in the hours.

The more you can practice the piano without overdoing it, the better. Try for 20 minutes at a time, several times a day at first.

It is better to be fully centered when you practice.

Always start by warming up slowly. Do not try  your most difficult pieces or sections at the very start, you will be disappointed.

It helps to give yourself goals to strive for every day; these goals should be measurable and attainable.

Your teacher or online course will help you set these goals.

Work on sight-reading and understanding written music. Also practice playing songs you have never seen before so you can improve your sight-reading skills

If you read about the composer you are playing, you will better understand their personality and their life and be able to interpret their music more authentically.

The skills a new pianist needs to learn piano will not come over night , so keep at it and do not give up. You can do it.
