The games market is certainly on the increase there is no doubt about that, if you look it is close to taking over DVD’s and CD sales. Music in video games was just thrown in to make the game sound cool when you are playing it but now it takes just as long to make the soundtrack as an artist takes to record an album if not longer. What is the reason for all of this?
How about the film Star Wars, would that be such a great film without the soundtrack that comes with it? Sure it would be a great film still but the soundtrack just gives it that push, it allows for a writer to tell the story that little bit better and adds realism to the franchise. So many game soundtracks are being given time and more thought and of course more budget because they know it will make a difference.
Think of a game like Halo, the ambient is always there but when you hit a moment of importance the music is unleashed and it really helps to tell the overall story. Of course this is what happens within the movie industry.
Another important thing to take into consideration is the amount of artists that want to work with games nowadays, instruments that wouldn’t work in a film work perfectly in a game, takebanjos as an example for the much loved Banjo Kazooie franchise.
Albums of the game soundtracks are being released and even better they are being purchased and the soundtracks are made from all kinds of instruments from electro acoustic guitars to the simple electric guitars.
As the years go by it would seem that video game music is becoming more and more important.
Expect to hear better sounding game soundtracks as the years progress.
