Having a goal will be the driving force that will see you though the long process of learning how to play the cello. Make it your inspiration to the very end. Your goal could either be to master a particular piece, enter a competition or be accomplished enough to meet a school criteria. Whatever that goal is, that is what you should focus on.

In line with this, you should understand way from the start that learning the cello takes time.
You cannot expect to be an expert in a month’s time. Patience is an essential requirement. Patience is a virtue, and in learning how to play cello, it would really be helpful.

The next thing you need to do is find the right teacher. To do this, you need to take into consideration different aspects about the teacher.

First, find out how long they have been teaching and playing the cello. Ascertain if they had any professional experience.

Second, ask what music schools they graduated from and if they garnered any awards or accolades. This will give you an indication of how good a cello teacher he or she is. Third, find out how the students are progressing so far in their lessons. You can definitely see how good a cello teacher is when you look at their students.

Last, but not the least, you should know the teaching personality of the cello teacher. The teacher’s personality will tell you how passionate she is about the instrument and what teaching style she employs. All these things, should lead you to find the perfect cello teacher for you.

Once you find the perfect teacher, the next thing to take into consideration is your practices. You obviously cannot rely on just the teacher’s lessons if you want to be a really good cello player. You should also allot regular schedules throughout the week in order to hasten the improvement of your skills. Pick the right time of the day where you know you will be able to perform well. Also think about preparing all the things that you will need when you practice. Basic necessities are a chair, pencils, music pieces, music stand, and of course, the cello. When you have everything you need, you won’t be wasting time during practice to get, for instance, a pencil.

Before starting the practice session, you should also make sure that you are prepared mentally and physically. If you are thinking about other things, you should take them off your mind for the meantime. Concentrate on the job at hand to maximize the benefits of your practice session. Also, any physical needs such as food and water should be addressed before the practice session. This is to ensure that you have all the energy you need for the exhausting practice.
