If you’re starting lessons later in life, don’t worry: you’re never too young to play the electric guitar!

Learning to play is probably easier than you think. Still, you need to be dedicated, committed, and motivated to the electric guitar. If you’re not fired up and motivated every single day, you will never learn to play more than a simple song or two.

You must make a big commitment to this amazing instrument. You need to set up daily goals and weekly plans, and you must meet them. If you’re willing to do as such, you will truly learn how to play an electric guitar.

Follow these four steps:
1.    Get yourself an electric guitar.
2.    Find a quiet place to practice.
3.    Find a good home study course or a private teacher.

Many new electric guitarists put their trust in a private instructor. There’s nothing wrong with that; the majority of private instructors work at music shops and are obviously talented musicians who can play the guitar really well. It’s tough to beat that kind of resource because they will sit down next to you and help you work on one-on-one skills.
The major drawbacks, however, are that private instructors charge a lot of money, and the lessons themselves are huge time commitments. You can expect a few half hour lessons every week along with “homework”. As for price, you will be paying AT LEAST $15-$16 per thirty minute electric guitar lesson!

If you’ve the money and time, then by all means, take this route!
However, you need to understand that this isn’t your only option. It’s not the end of the world if you don’t learn anything from a private instructor. Some of the best guitarists in the world learned by themselves!

Bookstores and the internet will provide just as much—if not more—information on how to play as a private instructor would. Many of these resources provide:

·    Instruction on tuning

·    Advanced tricks and techniques

First off, congratulations! There are so many benefits of guitar playing. It can serve as an enjoyable hobby or even evolve into a full time job of playing in a band. Some people prefer the acoustic guitar over the electric. Why? Because the feel and the sound is perfect for any setting and doesn’t drain the vocals out. It’s also easier to handle and transport.

Learning to play is a bit difficult at first, but it will become much easier in time. After a couple of years of regular practice, you’ll be playing with ease!

It’s not hard. Just follow these 5 acoustic guitar instruction steps:

1.    Get yourself an acoustic guitar that is comfortable. You can start out with an inexpensive one and buy a more expensive one after you become more experienced.

2.    Pick a certain time of day to play. You need to set aside a half hour in which you do nothing but play. Don’t play for any longer than an hour since it is easy to pick up bad habits. You should play 5-7 days a week.

3.    Grab your guitar, place it in the proper position, and allow yourself to become comfortable with the strings. Pay attention to how each string sounds. Strike one at a time, working your way down individually and then back up.

4.    As you learn acoustic guitar basics and become more comfortable with each string, shift your attention to the acoustic guitar’s neck. Practice playing the notes individually. Check that your left hand is positioned correctly and pay attention to how the note sounds.

5.    Gradually evolve into playing the chords individually. Start with simple 2 or 3 fingered chords and go from there. The “D Minor”, “A Minor”, and “E Minor” chords are the best place to start.
Beginners often seek further advice by consulting with an instructor and engaging in a lesson or two every week. However, there are some downsides to this. For one, private lessons are rather costly and time consuming. You will have to set aside two to five days a week to travel and meet with your instructor. Then you’ll need to set extra time aside to practice with an instructor.

The instructor will work with you personally during your acoustic guitar lessons, which is great, but many of them care more about money than anything else. Also, they work with many different beginning players and aren’t quite as “personal” as you would expect them to be. It can vary between teachers.

Some newbies also struggle learning and playing in front of someone else, especially when that person is more advanced. They would prefer playing on their own and alone. Plus, playing the acoustic guitar with a private teacher can be rather expensive—$150+ a month or so, for only two lessons a week! Still, trying to learn on your own can be extremely difficult.

So, what is a chord diagram?

A guitar chord diagram is basically a visual representation of a single chord, which is often referred to as a “chord box”. It’s essentially a rectangle shaped box that shows you how to play a specific chord. It represents the fretboard on the guitar, and shows you precisely where your fingers need to go in order to form a chord. Needless to say, it can help make it playing guitar chords easier. How to read a guitar chord diagram.

There are a dozen or so different formats and styles, but all guitar chord diagrams have these common features:

·    There are 6 lines that symbolize the strings on a guitar. Depending on the format of the box, the strings either run across the page horizontally or up and down the page vertically.

·    When looking at a vertical diagram, the string on the left side represents the low “E” string, and the one on the right is the high “E” (the thinnest string).

·    There are lines running along the string lines at a right angle. These represent the frets. This is an important thing to remember when taking your guitar chords lessons.
·    Dots are placed on the grid to show which strings need to be pressed on which fret in order to play the chord.
While this is just basic information on a chord diagram, it can still be enough to teach you how to form and play a guitar chord. The greatest part is that you do not need to even know how to read standard music, or even guitar tabulature, to read a chord diagram!
Here are some more features of guitar chord diagrams that feature even more important info:
·    On the top part of the box there is a thick line representing the end of the neck—the nut.
·    An “x” symbol on top of the nut line means, “Don’t play this string!”
·    An o” symbol above the nut line means that the string is played open (not fingered).
·    Numbers 1-4 under the box (usually on the dots) indicate the finger you must use on that string. One is for the index finger, and four is the little finger.
·    A bar or line running across more than one string indicates a “barre chord”, which means one finger has to press more than one string.

“Da-da-da, my baby left me, da-da-da, ’bout the break of day, da-da-da, she ain’t comin’ back, da-da-da,  nothin’ more to say…”  This could certainly describe our economy these days, couldn’t it? Or, a lost relationship? How about a lost job, home, income, wife, husband, health insurance, etc?

Every human being on the face of the Earth has a right to sing the blues. No matter what your station in life, we all go through times of deep despair. Let me say right now that we also go through times of great happiness, too. But, the human condition is wrought with enough blues-singing material to fill a billion pages.

I’ve been a blues songwriter, singer and performer for years. I didn’t look for the blues. It found me. Turns out that after reading an Eric Clapton interview in the 80′s, I realized that the rock-solid thread running through all the music I liked best was THE BLUES. Thanks, EC! In that interview, Clapton turned me on to Muddy Waters (real name: McKinley Morganfield), and The Undisputed King of the Delta Blues: Robert Johnson.

It is often said that “Blues had a baby and named it ‘Rock and Roll’.” The Beatles had a strong blues foundation as did The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Jefferson Airplane, The Doors (the latter two actually played at my high school in 1968!), The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Canned Heat, Aretha Franklin, and hundreds of others. That’s what my music is all about.

Nothing feels better than singin’ the blues. It’s a cathartic release of a deep soulful nature. It’s a very spiritual feeling. I am never angry, frustrated or sick of playing the blues when I’m performing them. The fact that I’ve been able to write, record and perform my own compositions with my band, The Buzzard Brothers (of Flagstaff, AZ), is nothing short of miraculous. I could have never dreamed I’d be so fortunate. And, because of this amazing technological age we’re all a part of, I now have my songs on YouTube and iLike, which is a blessing, and a growing addiction (if you look up my name and include YouTube or iLike in a search, you will find me). Please forgive the shameless self-promotion.

I even have the high honor and good fortune to be able to perform at my job working with psychiatric patients at our local regional hospital. A good number of these patients are players themselves. So, we’ll sit and pass the guitar around at impromptu songwriter circles. They get much needed relief from playing our community guitar. It’s one of the most therapeutic tools we have, outside the obvious medical and psychiatric treatment they receive. I also used my guitar continually as a teaching tool during my 30-year career as an elementary school teacher.

For me, no song is worth anything unless somebody hears it. I suppose it validates the song itself. It brings closure. Many closet writers probably don’t need this type of gratification. But, I must confess, I do. The older I get, the more grateful I am to be able to play guitar and sing and lay it all on the line. It doesn’t get any better. It certainly never gets old.

And, while the songs come as if by magic, I never turn one down. If it’s there, I write it. I feel as though I’m compelled and honor-bound to do it. And now, I can throw it right up on YouTube easy as pie. The best investment I’ve ever made, save buying my gem of a guitar (it’s a Martin 00028EC Eric Clapton signature model acoustic), is my Canon Powershot SX10IS still-shot and video camera. What a blast. The kicker is: if I can do it, so can YOU!

The moral of the story is: we all have the blues residing inside us somewhere. If it’s yearning to be released, let it go and let it happen. You’ll never feel so good about feelin’ so bad.
